5th International Stone Sculpture Symposium

Balatonfured, Hungary

A 12-day sculpture symposium in travertine and Croatian limestone was held near Lake Balaton in Balatonfured, Hungary in June, 2008. Working alongside sculptors from China, Ecuador, Italy, Viet Nam, Hungary, Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia in a clearing on the site of a vast and beautiful horticultural academy, a short and joyful experience produced Watermarks, a 1,000 lb block of Croatian limestone in response to the theme of Man and Nature. Living, exchanging experiences and ideas with other stone carvers in the magical and ancient Hungarian landscape, was a moving and fantastic experience. Watermarks, 1m x 80cm x 60cm, is a metaphor for the many faces and forms water assumes - the rising tidal wave as it reaches its zenith before crashing over itself to disappear, a calm swirling pool that can also pulse and tumble over the edge of a cliff in a violent rush, and gentle ripples in slow motion - strive to bring human and animal emotions to the surface.
